The All Jammu and Kashmir Transport Welfare Association (AJKTWA) has called for a “chakka jam” (road blockade) in Jammu on Friday to press its demand for the removal of the newly set up Sarore toll plaza along the Jammu-Pathankot highway in Samba district.
The AJKTWA is joined by the Jammu Chamber of Commerce and Industries (JCCI) and several political parties in Jammu and Kashmir, including the Congress, the National Conference, and the Peoples Democratic Party.
The chakka jam will begin at 10:00 AM on Friday and will continue until further notice. All transport associations and other organizations will assemble at Bhagwati Nagar Chowk in Jammu city for the blockade.
The protest is being held against the establishment of the Sarore toll plaza, which is located just 10 kilometers from another toll plaza. The protesters argue that the new toll plaza is unnecessary and will only add to the burden of the people.
Twenty-six Yuva Rajput Sabha (YRS) leaders were arrested on August 21 during protests over the issue for violating restrictions imposed around the Sarore toll plaza. They were released on August 27.
The hunger strike of YRS activists and civil society members entered the eighth day on Thursday. Four activists have been hospitalized after their health deteriorated.
The protesters are demanding the immediate removal of the Sarore toll plaza and the release of all arrested activists.
The Jammu and Kashmir government has not yet responded to the demands of the protesters.
