US President Joe Biden will attend the G20 Summit in New Delhi on Friday and Saturday, following the COVID-19 guidelines of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Biden’s wife, First Lady Jill Biden, tested positive for COVID-19 on Monday. The president was tested for the virus on Monday and Tuesday, but his results were negative. He tested negative again on Thursday, just before his departure for India.
After arriving in New Delhi on Friday evening, Biden is expected to have a bilateral meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. His meetings and interactions with Modi and other world leaders during and on the sidelines of the G20 Summit will be driven by the COVID-19 protocols established by the CDC.
The First Lady is not traveling to India with the president. She is quarantined at their home in Delaware after testing positive for COVID-19.
The G20 is a forum for the world’s major economies. Its members represent around 85% of the global GDP, over 75% of the global trade, and about two-thirds of the world population.
The summit is being hosted by India this year. Biden is expected to focus on economic opportunity for developing countries, climate change, and technology during his visit.
He is also expected to discuss the Ukraine crisis with Modi and other world leaders.
The G20 Summit is a major opportunity for Biden to engage with world leaders and advance his agenda on the global stage.
