In anticipation of a large influx of devotees during the Chaitra Navratri festival, beginning March 30th, authorities have implemented stringent security measures at the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine. These measures come amidst heightened regional tensions following a recent encounter with suspected Pakistani terrorists in Kathua.
To ensure pilgrim safety, security has been significantly reinforced at Katra, the shrine’s base camp. Reasi SSP Paramvir Singh assured devotees of robust security arrangements, including increased deployments at strategic locations and thorough security checks throughout Katra town.
Key security measures include:
- Advanced Surveillance: Over 500-600 AI-enabled CCTV cameras have been installed along the pilgrimage route, complemented by drone surveillance.
- Increased Personnel: Joint teams of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and police, along with quick reaction teams, are deployed and maintaining high vigilance.
- Track Monitoring: The CRPF is closely monitoring the track leading to the shrine.
- Enhanced Infrastructure: The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB) has developed new infrastructure, including an all-weather covered resting area at Ardhkuwari for 1,500 pilgrims, and a renovated “Darshani Deodi” with a double-storey queue complex.
- Increased Footfall: The shrine is already experiencing a surge in pilgrims, with daily numbers reaching nearly 40,000 and expected to rise further during the festival. CEO Anshul Garg of SMVDSB has stated that the shrine board has made arrangements to accommodate the increased number of pilgrims.
- Regional Security: Security has been increased in Jammu city and along highways, with increased vehicle checks and frisking of people, in light of recent terror incidents and the upcoming Eid and Navratri festivals.
