National Conference (NC) President Farooq Abdullah criticized the Waqf (Amendment) Act on Monday, deeming it “unconstitutional.” He stated the NC opposes the legislation and places its hopes in the Supreme Court for a just resolution. “The NC is against this Waqf Bill. We believe it is unconstitutional, and parties have petitioned the Supreme Court. Consequently, the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly Speaker refrained from allowing a debate, as the matter is now before the Supreme Court. We are optimistic that the Supreme Court will deliver justice,” Abdullah told reporters in Ganderbal district, central Kashmir.
Regarding Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s visit, Abdullah viewed it positively, suggesting it allows for a firsthand assessment of the Union Territory’s (UT) situation. He expressed a desire for the prompt restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood. “He visits regularly, which is beneficial. He can observe the situation, both along the borders and within the state. We hope they expedite the restoration of statehood,” Abdullah said.
When questioned about directly addressing the Waqf Amendment Act with the Home Minister, Abdullah responded, “Why should I engage? The Chief Minister will address it. I will not discuss that issue with him (Shah).”
