The Punjab Police have apprehended a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) following allegations of his participation in a drug and mobile phone smuggling operation within the Sangrur jail, Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav announced on Thursday.
A subsequent raid at the jail resulted in the seizure of nine mobile phones, four smartwatches, 50 grams of heroin, and other prohibited items, according to DGP Yadav.
In a post on X, DGP Yadav stated that initial inquiries indicated the involvement of a Class-IV employee, whose role in aiding the smuggling was discovered.
Continuing the investigation to trace the network, police arrested Manpreet Singh from Amritsar, an associate of Sangrur jail inmate Gurvinder Singh, the DGP reported. Authorities recovered 4 kg of heroin, ₹5.5 lakh in cash, a Glock pistol, and live ammunition from Manpreet.
“During investigation, DSP Security, Sangrur Jail, Gurpreet Singh was arrested for his involvement in smuggling activities inside the jail,” the DGP confirmed. He added that the DSP was found to be actively facilitating the smuggling of drugs and mobile phones into the jail and had been receiving payments through UPI accounts linked to his relatives.
The investigation is currently underway, and more arrests and revelations are anticipated.
DGP Yadav emphasized his unwavering commitment to a zero-tolerance policy against any internal compromise or collaboration with criminal elements. He affirmed that anyone found to be involved in illicit activities, irrespective of their rank or position, would face severe consequences.
