On Saturday, doctors at Ahmedabad Civil Hospital reported that a total of 270 victims from the Air India plane crash have been admitted. This figure is an increase from the previously reported death toll of 265.
According to officials, the city’s fire brigade has recovered one body and several body parts from the crash site within the last 24 hours. Dr. Dhaval Gameti, President of the Junior Doctors’ Association of BJ Medical College, confirmed to PTI that approximately 270 bodies have been transported to the civil hospital from the scene of the accident. The identification of victims through DNA matching is ongoing, and bodies will be released to their families once this process is complete.
The Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency Service (AFES) located human remains and a corpse in the last 24 hours at the Meghaninagar crash site.
The incident involved Air India flight AI 171, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner carrying 242 passengers and crew. The aircraft crashed into a medical hostel and its canteen complex in Meghaninagar shortly after taking off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on Thursday afternoon.
Jayesh Khadia, Additional Chief Fire Officer, stated that firefighters assisting forensic and aviation experts discovered body parts in the canteen’s rubble on Friday, with a full body found on Saturday morning. Cranes are being utilized to remove the aircraft’s tail fin, which is lodged atop the damaged canteen building. Khadia added that the removal of the tail fin will commence once Air India officials arrive at the site. Following the crash, senior police officials had initially reported at least 265 fatalities, encompassing both passengers and individuals on the ground.
