Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, a prominent leader of the Congress party, emphasized on Monday that the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar is a “very big issue” and called for the government to agree to a parliamentary discussion on the matter.
Speaking to reporters in the Parliament House complex, the Congress general secretary questioned why the opposition should refrain from raising concerns about the voters’ list. “It is a very big issue. If all this is being done to the voters’ list, why should we not raise it?” she stated, adding, “The government should agree to a discussion and move forward, why not?”
Her remarks followed the adjournment of the Lok Sabha until 2 pm due to protests by opposition parties demanding a debate on the Bihar voter roll revision.
Members of the INDIA bloc parties have been consistently protesting in the Parliament House complex against the Election Commission’s voter roll revision in Bihar, advocating for its rollback. While daily protests have been the norm, they were not held on Monday as a mark of respect following the passing of former Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren.
The opposition has been vocal in both Houses of Parliament against the SIR, alleging that the Election Commission’s exercise is an attempt to “disenfranchise voters” in Bihar ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections. They continue to demand a comprehensive discussion on the issue in both parliamentary houses.
