Indian security forces in the Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir have been engaged in one of the longest anti-terrorist operations in decades. The operation, which has been going on for eight consecutive days in the Akhal Devsar forest area, involves a coordinated effort by the Army’s elite Para forces, Rashtriya Rifles units, police, and CRPF.
So far, one terrorist has been killed, and a half-dozen Army personnel have been injured. The forces are using advanced technology, including UAVs, attack helicopters, and high-tech equipment, to flush out terrorists who are hiding deep within the forest. Director General of Police, Nalin Prabhat, visited the area to assess the ongoing operation.
This long-running operation is part of a broader, more aggressive campaign against terrorism in the region. Security forces have also been on high alert along the Line of Control (LoC). Recently, this intensified effort led to the elimination of three Pakistani terrorists, including LeT commander Suleman Shah, who were responsible for the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 people. That successful operation was code-named ‘Operation Mahadev’.
The security forces’ current strategy goes beyond targeting just armed terrorists. They are also focused on dismantling the entire ecosystem of terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir. This includes targeting over-ground workers, sympathizers, and individuals involved in drug smuggling and hawala money rackets, as these activities are believed to fund terrorist operations in the region.
