Srinagar witnessed a welcome break from the biting cold on Tuesday, with the minimum temperature rising above Monday’s minus 4.8 degrees Celsius to minus 1.5 degrees Celsius.
The respite extended to other parts of the valley as well, with Gulmarg recording a minimum of minus 3.5 degrees Celsius and Pahalgam experiencing a low of minus 1.5 degrees Celsius.
Ladakh, however, continued to shiver under bone-chilling cold. Leh recorded a minimum temperature of minus 7 degrees Celsius, while Kargil and Drass witnessed lows of minus 3.8 degrees Celsius and minus 5.1 degrees Celsius respectively.
The plains of Jammu also experienced a chilly night, with the minimum temperature dropping to 9.8 degrees Celsius in Jammu city. Katra, Batote, Bhaderwah and Banihal recorded lows of 8.2 degrees Celsius, 4.3 degrees Celsius, 2.6 degrees Celsius and 2 degrees Celsius respectively.
The relief from the biting cold is expected to be temporary, as the region prepares for the onset of the 40-day long period of harsh winter cold known as ‘Chillai Kalan’, which begins on December 21 and ends on January 30.
