The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has made strides in domestic weapons production with the launch of “Ugram,” an indigenous assault rifle designed for the Indian Army, paramilitary forces, and state police. This 7.62mm caliber rifle marks a significant collaboration between DRDO and a private industry partner, showcasing India’s growing capabilities in advanced weaponry.
The prototype, unveiled in Pune, boasts an effective range of 500 meters and weighs under four kilograms, meeting the Army’s strict weight requirements. Ruggedness and reliable operation are ensured through steel construction and compatibility with existing ammunition. Senior officials from the Army and Ministry of Home Affairs have already tested and commended the prototypes.
However, Ugram’s journey to deployment isn’t complete. Stringent trials by an independent committee await, followed by user trials before the rifle is officially adopted.
Furthermore, DRDO has inaugurated a state-of-the-art facility for manufacturing small arms barrels, aiming to become the country’s central hub for such technology. This move not only boosts domestic production but also empowers private firms to access advanced barrel-making capabilities.
The Director General of DRDO envisions this facility as a “technology hub” for developing cutting-edge infantry weapons, propelling India towards self-reliance in the defense sector.
