The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) celebrated a major victory on Sunday with the successful boring of the 700-meter Naushera Tunnel, a crucial link in the Akhnoor-Rajouri-Poonch Highway Project. This marks a significant step forward in enhancing regional connectivity and boosting transportation along National Highway 144A.
The Naushera Tunnel breakthrough ceremony was a joyous occasion, with workers erupting in cheers as the final meters were cleared. Lieutenant General Raghu Srinivasan, Director General of Border Roads, led the ceremony and highlighted the project’s importance.
“This is a major step in improving regional connectivity and facilitating smoother transportation along the National Highway,” he said. “The progress of the NH project is going at a great pace, and we expect it to be completed by 2026, ahead of schedule.”
The Naushera Tunnel is just one of several tunnels being constructed as part of the project. In November 2023, the Kandi Tunnel was also successfully bored, further advancing the project’s timeline.
Lt. Gen. Srinivasan emphasized the BRO’s commitment to strengthening defense infrastructure by building and upgrading strategic roads along the International Border, Line of Control, and Line of Actual Control.
“The development of infrastructure is a continuous process,” he stated. “The Border Roads Organisation is committed to playing its part in this vital task.”
The Akhnoor-Rajouri-Poonch Highway Project is not the only major infrastructure initiative underway in the region. In December 2023, the 3,209-meter-long T-1 tunnel between Katra and Reasi was successfully bored as part of the Udhampur-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project.
