Director General of Police (DGP) of Jammu and Kashmir, Dilbagh Singh, on Friday said that militancy in the region is at its last stage, with only a two-digit number of active militants remaining. He made the remarks during his visit to Kupwara district in north Kashmir.
Singh said that the security forces have made significant progress in curbing militancy, and that the remaining militants will be neutralized soon. However, he also expressed concern over the rise in drug trade in the region, which he said is a challenge for the law enforcement agencies.
Singh said that Pakistan has shifted its strategy from militancy to drug trafficking in recent years, and that this is a major challenge for the security forces. He called for the active support of the people, civil society, and youngsters in the fight against drugs.
The DGP also assured the public that adequate security arrangements have been put in place for the upcoming Independence Day celebrations. He expressed hope that all functions, including the main event in Srinagar, will be conducted peacefully.
During his visit to Kupwara, Singh inaugurated five buildings dedicated to the memory of the brave Jawans who lost their lives in the line of duty. He also inaugurated new police posts in Kandi, Kralpora, and Drugmulla.
Singh’s remarks come at a time when there is a renewed sense of normalcy in Jammu and Kashmir. Large-scale events with enthusiastic local participation are being organized, indicating a positive trend. However, the drug menace remains a serious challenge, and the security forces will need to continue their efforts to curb it.
