The highly anticipated Chenab Rail Bridge, a testament to India’s engineering prowess, is set to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 19th. This monumental structure marks a significant step towards connecting Jammu and Kashmir with the rest of the nation, as part of the 272-kilometer Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project.
“The Chenab Bridge, constructed amidst the challenging and geologically unstable Himalayan terrain, transcends its role as mere infrastructure. It embodies India’s determination, innovative spirit, and unwavering commitment to delivering progress to even the most remote regions,” stated Dilip Kumar, Executive Director, Information and Publicity, Railway Board.
The bridge, spanning 1,315 meters across the Chenab River near the Salal Dam, boasts a 467-meter main arch span and is designed to withstand wind speeds of up to 266 kmph. Rising 359 meters above the riverbed, it is recognized as the “world’s highest railway bridge,” surpassing the Eiffel Tower in height and standing nearly five times taller than the Qutub Minar.
Its construction involved the use of over 28,000 metric tonnes of steel and introduced an innovative cable crane system, a first for Indian Railways. This system, featuring two massive cable cars and pylons exceeding 100 meters in height, facilitated the transportation of materials across a 915-meter-wide gorge.
The bridge’s completion is a crucial component of the USBRL project, promising to provide an all-weather, dependable rail route that connects “not just terrain but aspirations,” effectively linking the Kashmir Valley to the broader Indian landscape. In conjunction with the bridge’s inauguration, Prime Minister Modi will also flag off the Vande Bharat train, running from Jammu to Srinagar via Katra, further enhancing connectivity and signifying a new era of development for the region.
