A catastrophic landslide struck the hilly regions near Meppadi in Kerala’s Wayanad district early Tuesday morning, resulting in the tragic loss of at least 19 lives, including innocent children.
Hundreds of people are feared trapped under the debris, prompting a massive search and rescue operation involving both state and central authorities.
The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has swiftly deployed multiple teams, including the Fire Force, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and the Kannur Defence Security Corps, to the disaster site. However, the ongoing heavy rainfall is significantly hampering rescue efforts, making it a perilous task for the brave personnel on the ground.
In response to the tragedy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed deep sorrow and extended financial assistance to the affected families. An ex-gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh will be provided to the kin of the deceased, while the injured will receive Rs 50,000. Rahul Gandhi, former Wayanad MP, has also offered support and pledged to coordinate with central authorities for additional assistance.
To provide immediate aid, the National Health Mission has established a control room and activated helpline numbers. Additionally, the Indian Air Force has deployed helicopters to expedite rescue operations.
The nation stands united in grief with the families of the victims and prays for the safety of those still missing. As rescue teams work tirelessly against the clock, hopes remain high for finding survivors amidst the rubble.
