National Conference president and veteran politician Dr. Farooq Abdullah has been summoned by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for questioning tomorrow in connection with alleged financial irregularities in the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA).
Abdullah, who served as Jammu and Kashmir’s Chief Minister from 1982 to 1984 and again from 1996 to 2002, was the JKCA president from 2001 to 2012. The alleged scam, spanning from 2004 to 2009, is being investigated by both the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the ED.
The accusations against Abdullah involve misuse of his position as JKCA president to make appointments that facilitated the siphoning of funds from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for personal gain. These funds were allegedly transferred to bank accounts of various individuals, including JKCA office bearers.
This is not the first time Abdullah has faced questioning in the scam. The ED has previously questioned him on several occasions. In July 2022, the agency filed a chargesheet against him under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) in connection with the case.
The ED has also attached movable and immovable assets worth Rs 21.55 crore belonging to Abdullah and others, based on a supplementary complaint filed in June 2022. This complaint followed the CBI’s July 2018 charge sheet against JKCA officials for wrongfully causing a loss of Rs 43.69 crore to the association.
