In a move to curb fraudulent activities, police in Anantnag, Jammu and Kashmir, have detained a habitual offender for repeatedly selling counterfeit gold. The accused, Showkat Ahmad Zargar, from Bijbehara, has been placed under the Public Safety Act (PSA) and moved to Kot Bhalwal Jail in Jammu.
Police records show Zargar has faced multiple complaints and First Information Reports (FIRs) over the years. Complaints against him were filed by:
- Shabir Ahmad Wani in January 2023
- Irshad Ahmad Ganie in October 2024
- Nageena Akhter and Zamrooda in July 2025
After receiving the complaints, police seized the items sold by Zargar and sent them to a Hallmarking Centre in Srinagar. The verification reports confirmed that all the seized items were fake.
Due to his continued involvement in deceiving the public and posing a threat to community trust and safety, Zargar was detained under the PSA. Anantnag Police have urged the public to stay alert against such scams and have reaffirmed their dedication to protecting citizens’ property.
