Chief Minister Omar Abdullah announced the implementation of free bus rides for women on State Road Transport Corporation (SRTC) and Smart Buses across Jammu and Kashmir, fulfilling a promise made during the Budget session. He emphasized the initiative’s goal of improving women’s mobility for education, shopping, and leisure, and enhancing their safety. Abdullah assured that any financial losses incurred by SRTC and Smart Buses due to the zero-fare tickets would be compensated from the government’s budget. The service will be available in all districts where these buses operate.
Amit Shah’s Visit to J&K
Regarding Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s upcoming visit, Abdullah clarified that it was scheduled prior to the recent Kathua encounters. He stated that the visit includes not only a security review but also a procession in Jammu and the review and inauguration of development projects in Srinagar. Drawing comparisons to past visits by other Union Ministers, he expressed confidence in securing further assistance from the central government.
Waqf Amendment Bill Opposition
Abdullah voiced strong opposition to the upcoming Waqf Amendment Bill, asserting that it unfairly targets the Muslim community. He argued that the bill singles out Waqf institutions, which are crucial for Muslim charitable contributions, while other religious institutions remain untouched. While acknowledging the Parliament’s final decision, he affirmed that his party will vehemently oppose the bill.
