A 37-year-old man, Abdul Hameed Sofi, from Arampora, Kupwara, tragically passed away at Government Medical College (GMC) Handwara on Tuesday morning, prompting allegations of medical negligence from his family.
Sofi, a father of three, was admitted to the hospital earlier in the day complaining of arm pain and discomfort. According to news reports, family members claimed that despite initial reports of stable condition following preliminary tests, Sofi’s condition deteriorated, and he subsequently died at the hospital.
Relatives alleged that hospital staff, including a compounder, dismissed Sofi’s condition as insignificant, and accused them of withholding an ECG report. They further claimed that no qualified doctor was present during the critical moments, despite the severity of Sofi’s condition.
The hospital authorities, however, refuted these allegations. Medical Superintendent Dr. Aijaz Ahmed Bhat stated that Sofi was admitted at 6:45 am with chest discomfort and was immediately attended by a doctor. An ECG test, which appeared normal, was conducted, and the patient was kept under observation.
Dr. Bhat explained that despite administering an injection and a tablet, Sofi suddenly collapsed. Resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful, and further tests, including TropT, were negative.
The allegations of mishandling and unavailability of doctors were investigated by the police and local Tehsildar. Preliminary findings based on CCTV footage suggested that both doctors and paramedical staff attended to the patient, contradicting the family’s claims of negligence.
Despite the preliminary findings, the hospital administration has promised a thorough investigation. A high-level committee will be formed to examine the family’s allegations, and a detailed report is expected within two to three days.
