Thirteen girl students at Government Girls Higher Secondary School Handwara accidentally inhaled pepper gas spray on Thursday and fell unconscious.
A school official said that a self-defense program was recently held at the school, where girls were given kits containing pepper gas spray. Although the pepper gas spray was removed from the kits and kept under school custody, some girls managed to take the kits with them, including pepper spray.
One of the girls had the pepper spray in her bag. It leaked in the afternoon, and the pepper gas spread throughout the classroom, causing 13 girls to fall unconscious. They were taken to District Hospital Handwara.
Dr. Ajaz Ahmad, Deputy Superintendent of District Hospital Handwara, confirmed that 13 girls had been admitted to the hospital. He said that all the girls were safe and there was nothing to worry about. They were discharged after receiving proper treatment.
