New Delhi and Accra have significantly strengthened their bilateral relationship, elevating it to a Comprehensive Partnership. This move was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi following extensive discussions with Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama on Wednesday. Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment as a “co-traveller” in Ghana’s development journey, emphasizing a shared vision for progress.
Key Outcomes of the High-Level Meeting
Prime Minister Modi’s visit, the first by an Indian Prime Minister to Ghana in three decades, was marked by a special gesture from President Mahama, who personally received him at the airport. The leaders’ delegation-level talks culminated in the signing of four pacts covering various areas, including culture and traditional medicine.
Economic Cooperation and Trade Targets
Both nations have set an ambitious target to double two-way trade in the next five years. India is already a top trading partner for Ghana and the largest destination for Ghanaian exports, primarily gold. Indian companies have notably invested nearly two billion dollars in approximately 900 projects in Ghana.
Highlighting new avenues for economic collaboration, Prime Minister Modi expressed India’s readiness to share its expertise in UPI digital payments for Ghana’s FinTech sector. Indian companies will also be involved in the exploration and mining of critical minerals in Ghana.
Strengthening Security and Global South Solidarity
During their discussions, both leaders unequivocally condemned terrorism, with Modi thanking Ghana for its cooperation in counter-terrorism efforts. They committed to further strengthening mutual cooperation in countering this menace. In defense and security, the mantra of “security through solidarity” will guide enhanced cooperation, including training of armed forces, maritime security, defense supply, and cyber security.
Modi and Mahama also voiced serious concerns over conflicts in West Asia and Europe, advocating for resolution through dialogue and diplomacy. As members of the Global South, both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to its priorities, with Modi expressing pride in the African Union’s permanent membership in the G20, achieved during India’s G20 presidency. Ghana’s active participation in the Voice of Global South Summit was also acknowledged.
Diverse Areas of Collaboration
Beyond trade and security, the comprehensive partnership will foster cooperation in several other sectors, including skill development, healthcare, and cultural linkages. India also assured Ghana of all possible assistance as the West African nation undergoes major economic restructuring.
Prime Minister Modi described the talks as “extremely fruitful,” emphasizing that the elevated ties would benefit the people of both nations. The Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, reiterated the leaders’ commitment to democratic values, Global South solidarity, South-South cooperation, and a shared vision for sustainable development and global peace.
