Following the cloudburst and heavy rainfall that caused disruptions in the Ramban district of Jammu and Kashmir, the Indian Army immediately initiated well-coordinated relief and restoration efforts, offering crucial support to affected civilians and stranded travelers on National Highway-44 (NH44).
Responding swiftly to the unfolding situation, Quick Reaction Teams (QRTs) from Banihal, Karachial, Digdaul, Maitra, and Chanderkote were deployed. These teams provided hot meals, tea, essential medical aid, and temporary shelter to individuals stranded by landslides and road blockages.
Although no formal request for assistance was made, the Army’s response was closely synchronized with the District Administration, Police, and Traffic authorities. The Deputy Commissioner, SSP Ramban, and Superintendent of Traffic maintained continuous communication with Army officials throughout the day.
An Army spokesperson stated that eight Army columns, each with a strength of one officer, one JCO (Junior Commissioned Officer), and eighteen other ranks, have been placed on standby at key locations for rapid deployment should the situation worsen.
Simultaneously, efforts to clear the roads are in progress, utilizing heavy machinery from civilian companies such as KRCL, CPPL, and DMR. Officials anticipate that the complete restoration of connectivity on the highway may take up to 48 hours.
Amidst these ongoing relief operations, the resilience of the local people was apparent. One stranded commuter commented, “Koi dikkat nahi hai… Army hai na… Sab kuchh theek ho jaayega,” expressing confidence that with the Army’s presence, everything would be alright.
The Indian Army has reiterated its dedication to standing firmly with the people of Jammu and Kashmir, ensuring their safety, providing support, and offering assistance during challenging times.
