Srinagar – The Indian Army successfully rescued over 3,500 Amarnath Yatris who were stranded after a massive landslide near Z Morh, between Rayalpathri and Brarimarg, on the evening of July 16. The quick response by the Army averted a potential disaster, officials confirmed today.
The landslide, triggered by continuous heavy rainfall around 7:15 PM, brought all movement on the Yatra route to a sudden halt, trapping thousands of pilgrims in the challenging terrain. An Army detachment at Brarimarg immediately launched a coordinated rescue and relief operation.
Approximately 500 pilgrims were provided immediate shelter in Army tents, receiving tea and drinking water. Another 3,000 Yatris were accommodated at various langars located between Brarimarg and Z Morh, where Army personnel and volunteers worked together to ensure their basic needs were met.
In a critical operation, Army Quick Reaction Teams (QRTs) manually evacuated a sick pilgrim who was stranded between two landslide-prone areas at Rayalpathri. Despite the darkness, rain, and unstable ground, the QRTs safely carried the individual on a stretcher to an awaiting ambulance for medical attention.
Officials stated that the Camp Director at Brarimarg and the Company Commander of the Indian Army were present on-site throughout the operation, personally overseeing the rescue efforts. While light rain continues in Rayalpathri and Brarimarg, the situation is stable and under control.
