In a momentous occasion for Indian space exploration, ISRO successfully launched its first X-ray Polarimeter Satellite (XPoSat) on Monday. This satellite promises to unlock unprecedented insights into celestial objects, particularly black holes, by studying their X-ray polarization.
The ever-reliable Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) C58 mission flawlessly delivered XPoSat into its intended 650 km low Earth orbit, lifting off precisely at 9.10 am from the first launch pad in Sriharikota. The 25-hour countdown culminating in the majestic ascent of the 44.4-meter tall rocket, met with thunderous applause from the gathered spectators, marked a thrilling chapter in India’s spacefaring journey.
XPoSat is designed to delve into the intriguing realm of X-ray polarization from intense celestial sources. This dedicated scientific satellite, a first for ISRO, will conduct space-based measurements of this phenomenon, offering crucial clues about the radiation mechanisms and geometry of various celestial objects.
XPoSat carries two primary payloads: POLIX, developed by the Raman Research Institute, measures X-ray polarization parameters, while XSPECT, built by the U R Rao Satellite Centre, provides detailed spectroscopic information. The mission is expected to extend knowledge for at least five years.
