Jammu police have initiated a crackdown on individuals suspected of aiding Rohingya immigrants in the district. Seven FIRs have been filed against people accused of providing shelter to the Rohingya and assisting them in obtaining government benefits.
The operation involved searches at various locations housing Rohingya individuals, as well as the residences of those allegedly facilitating their stay and benefit access. These searches, conducted in the presence of magistrates, yielded the seizure of illegally acquired Indian documents such as PAN cards, Aadhaar cards, and bank documents, along with other incriminating material.
“Investigation into the matter has commenced, and further details will be shared in due course,” a police spokesperson stated, emphasizing that “stringent action will be taken against all such offenders in the future.”
This action in Jammu follows a similar incident in Kishtwar district, where a case was registered after uncovering illegally obtained documents like Aadhaar cards during a crackdown on Rohingya presence.
The Rohingya, a Bengali-speaking Muslim minority from Myanmar, have faced persecution in their home country, leading many to enter India illegally through Bangladesh and seek refuge in Jammu and other parts of the nation. Government data indicates that over 13,700 foreigners, including Rohingya and Bangladeshis, reside in Jammu and Kashmir, with their population experiencing a significant rise between 2008 and 2016.
