A resident of Lower Roop Nagar, Janipur, Jammu, Akashay Kumar Aryan, reported to the police that while walking from his home to the library, an unknown individual on a scooty snatched his iPhone 12, valued at ₹70,000.
Based on this complaint, FIR No. 17/2025 under Section 307 of the BNS was registered at Janipur Police Station, and an investigation was launched.
Janipur SHO, Inspector Vikram Sharma, utilized smart city camera footage to identify the suspect’s scooty, bearing registration number JK02CF 0979. Within six hours, two individuals were apprehended: Sumeet Sharma, son of Omkar Sharma, resident of Bhaderwah, currently residing in Paloura, Jammu, and Aman, son of Satveer, resident of Rajeev Nagar, Narwal, Jammu. The scooty was also seized.
The investigation is ongoing to identify and apprehend other members of the gang suspected of operating in Jammu using the same modus operandi. It was revealed that Sumeet Sharma is a repeat offender with a history of theft and snatching, this being his fifth FIR. Consequently, SHO Janipur has initiated his history sheet as per police regulations.
The smart city cameras proved instrumental in identifying the scooty’s registration number, which directly led to the swift arrest of the accused.
With the accused in custody and key evidence secured, the investigation is progressing towards a strong prosecution. The J&K Police have reiterated their commitment to maintaining law and order and ensuring swift justice.
