Jammu and Kashmir BJP president Ravinder Raina has served a defamation notice on former MLC Surinder Choudhary for his remarks against him while quitting the party recently.
Raina has sought an unconditional apology from Choudhary within a week for his attempts to damage his reputation among the masses and the party ranks. He has warned of a defamation suit worth Rs 5 crore against Choudhary after the expiry of the deadline.
Choudhary quit the Peoples Democratic Party on March 30 last year and joined the BJP within a week. However, he left the BJP and joined the National Conference on July 7 this year.
When he quit the BJP, Choudhary made a series of allegations against Raina on Twitter. He accused Raina of corruption and of using his position to benefit his own family and friends.
Raina has denied all of Choudhary’s allegations. He has said that Choudhary is making these allegations because he is angry that he was not given a position of power in the BJP.
The legal notice to Choudhary states that his allegations are “baseless” and “defamatory.” It says that Choudhary knew that Raina was not involved in any of the alleged acts, but he made the allegations anyway in order to damage his reputation.
The notice warns Choudhary that he will file a defamation suit against him if he does not apologize within a week. The suit will seek damages of Rs 5 crore.
Choudhary has not yet responded to the legal notice.
