Jammu and Kashmir is developing the Bungus Valley in Kupwara as a new eco-tourism destination, with a Rs 72 lakh development plan proposed for 2024-25, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah announced.
- Focus on Eco-Tourism: The development prioritizes preserving the area’s natural environment, avoiding large-scale construction like hotels.
- Planned Improvements: The initiative will include basic amenities such as rain shelters, public restrooms, signage, lighting, and waste disposal.
- Budget Allocation: Rs 30 lakh has been allocated for the 2024-25 fiscal year.
- Land Ownership: The Bungus Valley is primarily under the Forest Department’s jurisdiction, requiring coordination with the Kupwara Deputy Commissioner to identify suitable land for development. Necessary approvals and No Objection Certificates (NOCs) will be obtained through the Parivesh portal.
- Supporting Local Livelihoods: The Tourism Department is registering paying guest houses near the valley, aiming to boost local incomes and showcase the region’s culture, traditions, and cuisine. Currently, 19 paying guest houses are registered.
- Offbeat Destination: The goal is to establish Bungus Valley as an “offbeat” destination, emphasizing its unique natural beauty and cultural heritage.
