While recent rainfall in Kashmir has stopped, water levels in the Jhelum River at Ram Munshi Bagh and Pampore have reached the point where flooding is typically declared. Officials assure residents there’s no need to panic, as the water is expected to recede within the next two hours.
The reason for the temporary rise is because the surge of water from southern Kashmir is making its way through the central part of the river. Chief Engineer Naresh Kumar of the Irrigation and Flood Control Department (I&FC) confirmed that water levels at Sangam in south Kashmir have already begun to recede.
Kumar emphasized that the situation is under control and is being closely monitored. He advised residents to stay calm as the weather forecast shows significant improvement.
According to I&FC data, water levels at Pampore and Ram Munshi Bagh were on an upward trend as of 8:00 AM this morning, reaching 4.90 meters and 18.08 feet respectively.
Although Sangam’s water level has begun to recede, these other areas might see a temporary rise for the next couple of hours.
