A three-week long dry spell in Kashmir came to an end yesterday, with snowfall in the higher reaches of the valley and rains in the plains. Snowfall was reported in Gulmarg in north Kashmir and Sonamarg early in the morning. The weather department is predicting more snowfall throughout the day.
According to reports, most parts of the valley, including Srinagar city, experienced light rains. The rains have put an end to the three-week long dry spell in the valley, which had led to an increase in cough and cold, particularly among children and the elderly. However, the weather is expected to remain dry from tomorrow onwards for a week.
Gulmarg was the only weather station where the mercury dipped below zero degrees Celsius on Wednesday night, with the minimum temperature being minus 1 degree Celsius. In Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, the minimum temperature was 5.3 degrees Celsius, while in Qazigund it was 5 degrees Celsius. Pahalgam, in the Anantnag district of south Kashmir, recorded a low of 1.5 degrees Celsius.
