In a significant step towards urban rejuvenation and women’s empowerment, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha inaugurated a 1200-meter waterfront along the Kathua Canal in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua district. The project has directly employed approximately 150 people, with a majority being female beneficiaries.
LG Sinha emphasized that this multi-functional public space, designed for all age groups, will redefine the urban landscape, economy, and social fabric of Kathua, enhancing its identity and livability. The waterfront features dedicated tracks for walking, cycling, and skating, along with yoga spots and a food street housing 15 restaurants and cafes.
Sinha stated that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s guidance, the Union Territory’s administration is committed to bringing transformative change to its urban areas. He stressed that urban infrastructure projects should lay the foundation for a strong future for towns and villages, and that a smart city is characterized by smart and responsible citizens. He encouraged healthy competition among cities to continuously improve the quality of life for their citizens, envisioning such infrastructure as future tourism destinations.
The LG directed officials to ensure that urban rejuvenation projects are sustainable, provide green spaces, improve biodiversity, and empower cities to address climate change challenges. Speaking at the inauguration on Friday, he highlighted the administration’s efforts to build resilient infrastructure while preserving the unique cultural identity of Jammu and Kashmir’s cities and villages, emphasizing the importance of balanced and inclusive development.
Sinha expressed satisfaction with the progress of physical infrastructure in the Jammu division in fulfilling people’s aspirations. He wished for the continued development and modernization of every town and village in the division, enabling citizens to achieve their goals.
Additionally, the LG requested the district administration to identify rural areas in the district for the Rotary club’s surgical camp. He also inaugurated the Integrated Command and Control Centre in Kathua and flagged off a Bicycle Rally to commemorate the occasion. Sinha affirmed that the waterfront project prioritizes urban aesthetics and community well-being, with improved sanitation infrastructure and upgraded water supply systems ensuring environmental sustainability.
