The government has announced a nationwide cashless treatment scheme for road accident victims, effective from May 5, 2025. As per a gazette notification issued by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, individuals injured in road accidents involving motor vehicles on any road will be eligible for cashless medical treatment.
The scheme, named the Cashless Treatment of Road Accident Victims Scheme, 2025, entitles victims to treatment at any designated hospital for up to Rs 1.5 lakh per person per accident for a maximum of seven days from the date of the accident. Treatment at non-designated hospitals will be limited to stabilization, as specified in the scheme guidelines.
The National Health Authority (NHA) will serve as the implementing agency, collaborating with police, hospitals, and State Health Agencies. State Road Safety Councils will act as the nodal agencies at the state and Union Territory level, coordinating with the NHA for hospital onboarding, victim treatment, payment processing, and related activities through a designated portal.
A central government-constituted steering committee will oversee the scheme’s implementation. This nationwide scheme follows a pilot program launched by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) on March 14, 2024, to provide cashless treatment to road accident victims.
