Two fragile lives took flight in North Kashmir as authorities mounted a daring airlift to rescue newborn babies trapped by heavy snowfall. The infants, just 4 and 10 days old, were among five patients urgently needing specialized care unavailable at the local Sub District Hospital (SDH) in Karnah.
Battling treacherous conditions, rescuers braved the snowbound landscape, their ground route blocked by impassable roads. With time of the essence, a helicopter became their lifeline. The newborns, along with three other critical patients, including a stroke victim, were carefully transported to Kupwara for advanced medical attention.
SDM Tangdhar, Dr. Gulzar Ahmad, highlighted the urgency of the operation: “Shifting them by road was simply not possible. Their critical conditions demanded immediate specialized care, and the airlift was their only hope.”
Despite clearing internal roads, the avalanche risk kept the highway shut, forcing officials to rely on air travel. Dr. Ahmad assured continued efforts, stating, “We’ll organize further sorties to ensure everyone requiring medical attention receives it swiftly.”
