Ghulam Nabi Azad, chairman of the Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP) and a member of the high-level committee to examine the government’s ‘One Nation, One Election’ concept, said on Monday that there is no urgency to implement the concept.
The committee held its first official meeting last month. Azad said that only a preliminary meeting was held and it was more an introductory meeting.
He said that there is no urgency to implement the concept and that consultations need to be held with national parties, recognized parties, and regional parties. He also said that it is wrong information that the committee will take a decision on its own and that everyone’s opinion will be sought.
Azad also commented on the Women’s Reservation Bill, saying that it has come three decades late. He said that it should have been passed 15 to 20 years ago, or even 30 years ago. He lauded the government and all other parties for getting the bill passed.
In summary, Azad said that there is no urgency to implement the ‘One Nation, One Election’ concept and that consultations need to be held with all stakeholders. He also said that the Women’s Reservation Bill has come three decades late.
