Prime Minister Narendra Modi convened a high-level meeting on Sunday at his residence, 7, Lok Kalyan Marg in New Delhi, with key national security officials. Attendees included Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, and the chiefs of the three armed services. National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan were also present.
This meeting followed a period of increased tensions along India’s western border with Pakistan, stemming from “Operation Sindoor” conducted by the Indian Armed Forces on May 7. This operation targeted nine alleged terror infrastructures in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) as a response to the April 22 Pahalgam attack, which resulted in the deaths of 26 tourists.
Despite the recent military action, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar stated on Saturday that India and Pakistan had reached an understanding regarding the cessation of firing and military operations. He emphasized India’s continued firm stance against terrorism in a post on X.
Jaishankar’s comments followed a reported agreement between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of India and Pakistan to halt all firing and military action. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri had informed the media that the Pakistani DGMO contacted his Indian counterpart on Saturday afternoon, leading to an agreement for a ceasefire effective from 1700 hours Indian Standard Time, with a planned follow-up discussion between the DGMOs on May 12 at 1200 hours.
However, in a subsequent briefing on Saturday, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri reported that Pakistan had allegedly violated this understanding by engaging in firing and military action. He stated that the Indian Army had retaliated against these border intrusions, emphasizing that India views these violations with “very serious note” as a breach of the earlier agreement.
