Prime Minister Narendra Modi convened a high-level meeting at his residence on Saturday, attended by key security officials including Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, and Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan. The meeting also saw the participation of Air Chief Marshal AP Singh, Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi, Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri.
A significant outcome of the day was an agreement reached between India and Pakistan on a cessation of firing and military operations. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar communicated this development via a post on X, reiterating India’s unwavering stance against terrorism.
“India and Pakistan have today worked out an understanding on stoppage of firing and military action. India has consistently maintained a firm and uncompromising stance against terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. It will continue to do so,” stated Jaishankar.
Earlier in the day, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri informed the media that Pakistan’s Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) had contacted his Indian counterpart in the afternoon.
“Pakistan’s Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) called Indian DGMO at 15:35 hours earlier this afternoon. It was agreed between them that both sides would stop all firing and military action on land and in the air and sea with effect from 1700 hours Indian Standard Time,” Misri announced.
He further added, “Today, instructions have been given on both sides to give effect to this understanding. The Directors General of Military Operations will talk again on May 12 at 1200 hours.”
During a joint press conference held earlier in the morning, Foreign Secretary Misri had described Pakistan’s actions against India as “escalatory” and “provocative,” emphasizing that India was responding effectively.
The recent developments follow India’s launch of Operation Sindoor on May 7, a response to the deadly terror attack in Pahalgam on April 22 which resulted in 26 fatalities. In retaliation, India had targeted nine terror sites within Pakistan and Pakistan Occupied Jammu and Kashmir. Subsequently, Pakistan had reportedly intensified the situation with a series of unprovoked escalations involving artillery and drones.
