PM Modi Warns of Deepfake Threat, Calls on Media to Educate Public

Prime Minister Narendra Modi raised concerns about the potential misuse of deepfakes, synthetic media created using artificial intelligence, during a recent media interaction. He cautioned that deepfakes could exacerbate societal tensions and mistrust in the media, particularly in a diverse society like India.

Modi cited an instance of a deepfake video of him singing at a garba festival, which he has never attended. He emphasized the need for media literacy and awareness to counter the spread of such misinformation.

To address the issue, Modi suggested implementing disclosure requirements for deepfakes similar to health warnings on cigarette packs. He also urged the media to play a constructive role in promoting India’s development aspirations and highlighting the country’s strengths.
