On Monday, a joint operation by the Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch Police and the Army’s Romeo Force led to the discovery of a suspected terrorist hideout in the Surankot village of Poonch. Authorities recovered five Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), several radio sets, wires, binoculars, and blankets from the location.
Photos released by the Poonch police depicted the recovered items, including the multiple radio sets and the five IEDs.
This significant bust occurred a day after Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir, VK Birdi, conducted a joint security review meeting at PCR Kashmir. The meeting involved officers from various security agencies, such as the Police, Army, Intelligence Agencies, and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs). During the meeting, officers briefed IGP Kashmir on the overall security situation, with a focus on understanding the existing security challenges in the Kashmir Valley.
Separately, amidst increased tensions between India and Pakistan, the Army reported responding to unprovoked small arms firing across the Line of Control (LoC) during the night of May 4 and 5. Official sources stated that the Pakistan Army initiated unprovoked small arms firing across the LoC in areas opposite Kupwara, Baramulla, Poonch, Rajauri, Mendhar, Naushera, Sunderbani, and Akhnoor within the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. The Indian Army reportedly responded promptly and with proportionate force.
Similar incidents of unprovoked small arms firing by the Pakistan Army across the LoC were reported on the night of May 3 and 4 in the same areas, which the Indian Army effectively retaliated against in a calibrated and proportionate manner. This marks the eleventh consecutive day of India’s retaliation following the commencement of unprovoked small arms firing by the Pakistan Army on the night of April 25-26.
Furthermore, following a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on April 22, which resulted in 26 fatalities, India’s Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) announced on April 30 the closure of its airspace to all aircraft registered in Pakistan and those operated by Pakistani airlines.
