Authorities in Jammu and Kashmir’s Samba district have imposed restrictions on the movement of people near Sarore toll plaza after a protest by an outfit called ‘Yuva Rajput Sabha’ demanding its removal.
The protest took place on Monday, when hundreds of Yuva Rajput Sabha activists gathered near the toll plaza and demanded its removal. Some of the protesters even tried to damage the structure, and the police had to use lathi-charge to disperse them.
The protesters said that the toll plaza has been set up in violation of the rules, and that people have to pay an unnecessary toll while moving out of their homes for essential work.
In response to the protest, the Samba District Magistrate Abhishek Sharma imposed Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), which forbids the gathering of four or more people at a particular place. The order was imposed in and around the toll plaza late Monday night.
Police also detained some outfit activists during the night after they sat on a dharna outside the toll plaza.
The protest is the latest in a series of protests against toll plazas in Jammu and Kashmir. In recent months, there have been protests against toll plazas in other parts of the state, including Kathua, Udhampur, and Rajouri.
The protests have been organized by various organizations, including trade bodies and student groups. The protesters argue that the toll plazas are an unnecessary burden on the people, and that the money collected from the tolls is not being used for the benefit of the people.
