A recent spell of rain has brought a noticeable chill to the Kashmir Valley, with temperatures dipping to five degrees Celsius. This weather shift comes as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert, predicting thunderstorms, lightning, and heavy rainfall for the Jammu region and Himachal Pradesh, along with potential hail in Punjab.
Despite the colder conditions, tourists are embracing the winter experience, particularly the snowfall in popular destinations like Gulmarg. Akshay, a visitor from Mumbai, described the sudden change: “It’s significantly colder now. Yesterday was clearer, but today’s rainfall has intensified the chill. We were fortunate to witness mesmerizing snowfall in Gulmarg on February 26th and 27th, a truly incredible experience.” He also highlighted the enjoyment of Dal Lake, “We loved riding on Dal Lake and staying in a houseboat. The food and the experience, despite the rain and snow, were fantastic. With February ending and March beginning, we’re hoping for more pleasant weather. This is a great time to visit compared to the previous three months.”
Anvita, from Vadodara, Gujarat, echoed the sentiment of the cold, stating, “We’re wearing four layers, and it’s still very chilly, but we’re enjoying it immensely. The houseboat stay and Shikara ride were wonderful, and the local homemade food was delicious.” She added, “I’ve seen the forecast, and there’s a possibility of snowfall between the 6th and 13th. If that happens, it would be amazing, and everyone should come.”
Winter tourism continues to flourish in Kashmir, with visitors actively participating in boat rides, savoring local cuisine, and exploring the scenic beauty of the region.
