Heavy rain in Srinagar since Thursday evening has caused widespread flooding, making it difficult for people to get around the city.
Traffic jams clogged major roads in both the city center (Downtown) and outlying areas (Uptown). Submerged potholes added to the chaos, making it nearly impossible for vehicles to drive smoothly.
The worst flooding hit downtown neighborhoods like Malkhah, Nowhatta, Khanyar, and Khayam. Resident Asiya reported, “It’s impossible to walk on the roads downtown. Most of the streets are flooded. The road at Malkha was underwater up to my knees during the rain.”
Other areas, including Rambagh, Natipora, Bemina, Bagh-e-Mehtab, Mehjoor Nagar, and Indra Nagar, also faced similar problems.
Residents said the flooding limited their movements, with many avoiding driving altogether. The overflowing streets were blamed on a faulty drainage system, along with ongoing smart city projects that have disrupted drainage flow, particularly in downtown areas.
Srinagar Municipal Corporation officials said crews are working to address the issue. “We have teams out with all the necessary equipment,” they reported. “Our staff and machinery are on the scene actively working to resolve the situation.”
