Police in Srinagar have arrested four people for running a honey trap scam. The gang, which consisted of a woman and three men, would lure unsuspecting victims into compromising situations and then blackmail them for money.
The woman, Ashiya of Bemina, would set up meetings with the victims, posing as a professional such as a reporter or police officer. The other members of the gang, Firdous Ahmed Mir of Rainawari, Mohd Tariq Mir of Lal Bazar, and Masrat Mir of Habba Kadal, would then pose as law enforcement officials and threaten to arrest the victim if they did not pay up.
The gang operated out of a house in Mehjoor Nagar. They have been charged with extortion, impersonation, and criminal intimidation.
The arrest of this gang is a reminder of the dangers of online and offline scams. It is important to be wary of strangers and to never give out personal information to people you do not know.
