The BJP has taken a swipe at the Congress and the AAP over the arrest of Punjab MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira, saying that it showed their opposition coalition INDIA was falling apart in Punjab and Delhi.
Khaira was arrested by the Punjab Police in a drug trafficking case of 2015. The Congress, which is part of the INDIA alliance, lashed out at the AAP, which is in power in Punjab and Delhi.
Union minister and BJP leader Hardeep Singh Puri said that Khaira’s arrest was a sign of the “mohabbat ki dukan” (shop of love) between the AAP and the Congress. He said that the INDIA alliance was falling apart in Punjab and Delhi.
AAP national convener and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said that his party was committed to the INDIA alliance and would not break away from it. However, he did not comment on Khaira’s arrest.
The Punjab unit of the Congress has already opposed any alliance with the AAP in the state for the 2024 parliamentary elections.
The arrest of Khaira and the subsequent reactions from the Congress, the AAP, and the BJP have raised questions about the future of the INDIA alliance. It remains to be seen whether the alliance will be able to survive the current crisis.
