The Baramulla police have taken a major step in the fight against drug peddling by freezing properties worth Rs 2.1 crore belonging to drug smugglers in the district.
The properties, which include three residential houses, three vehicles, and cash, were seized under sections 68-E and 68-F (1) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act 1985.
The freezing of properties is a stringent provision of the NDPS Act that allows the police to take action against drug peddlers who have acquired assets through their illegal activities.
This action by the Baramulla police is a major blow to the financial operations of drug smugglers and will deter others from getting involved in the trade.
The police have also appealed to the general public to share any information they have about drug peddlers with the authorities. The identity of informants will be kept confidential.
The police action has been welcomed by the general public, who are hopeful that it will help to create a drug-free atmosphere in the district.
