As of Wednesday, 190 victims of last week’s Air India flight AI-171 crash in Ahmedabad have been identified through DNA testing. The London-bound flight, carrying 242 passengers and crew, crashed on June 12, resulting in the deaths of all but one person on board and 29 on the ground.
Officials have confirmed that 159 bodies have been released to their families. This includes 127 Indian nationals, 27 British nationals, four Portuguese nationals, and one Canadian. Among the Indian victims handed over, 123 were on the flight and four were killed on the ground.
Dr. Rakesh Joshi, medical superintendent of Ahmedabad Civil Hospital, stated that the DNA matching process is ongoing for the remaining unidentified bodies, many of which were severely damaged or charred.
In addition to the fatalities, 71 people were injured in the crash. Currently, 19 patients remain hospitalized: seven at the Civil Hospital and 12 at private hospitals in Ahmedabad and Dahod. Sadly, three injured individuals admitted to the Civil Hospital have died during treatment.
The state government had previously collected DNA samples from 250 victims to aid in identification.
