On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a global conference celebrating the birth centenary of the late agri-scientist M. S. Swaminathan. Modi declared that India’s farmers, fishermen, and dairy farmers are a top priority and that the country will never compromise their interests. He stated that he is prepared to “pay any price” to uphold this commitment.
The prime minister’s remarks followed an announcement by the United States to increase tariffs on Indian goods, including agricultural products, to 50%.
During the conference, Modi also released a commemorative coin and stamp to honor Swaminathan.
Known as the “father of the Green Revolution” in India, M. S. Swaminathan was a renowned Indian geneticist and agricultural scientist. His groundbreaking work in the 1960s, which involved introducing high-yielding wheat varieties and modern farming techniques, dramatically increased food production and helped reduce poverty among Indian farmers.
Swaminathan was born on August 7, 1925, and passed away on September 28, 2023, at the age of 98.
