Indian batting superstar Virat Kohli has heaped praise on Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) teammate Glenn Maxwell for his match-winning double century against Afghanistan in the ongoing ODI World Cup.
Maxwell’s knock helped Australia secure a spot in the semifinals of the tournament, and Kohli took to Instagram to laud his teammate’s performance.
“Only you could do this. Freak,” Kohli wrote, alongside a picture of Maxwell.
Maxwell’s innings was one of the most remarkable in recent ODI history. He came to the crease with Australia in a precarious position, chasing 292 for victory. However, he single-handedly took the game away from Afghanistan, scoring 201 runs off just 128 balls.
His innings was also notable for its physicality. Maxwell was battling cramps and niggles throughout, but he refused to give up. He hit 21 fours and 10 sixes, and brought up the winning runs with his tenth six.
Maxwell’s performance was also praised by batting legend Sachin Tendulkar, who called it the “best ODI knock” he had ever seen.
“A wonderful knock by @IZadran18 to put Afghanistan in a good position. They started well in the 2nd half and played good cricket for 70 overs but the last 25 overs from @Gmaxi_32 was more than enough to change their fortune. From Max pressure to Max performance! This has been the best ODI knock I’ve seen in my life. #AUSvAFG,” Sachin posted from his X handle.
Maxwell’s innings is sure to be remembered for many years to come. It was a performance that showed his immense talent and determination, and it helped Australia take a major step towards winning the World Cup.
