Police in Baramulla, Kashmir, have arrested a man for impersonating as a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) and a Sub-Inspector (SI) in order to scam innocent citizens.
The accused, Mushtaq Ahmad Wani, was taken into custody following a written complaint from a victim who had been defrauded of Rs. 90,000 by Wani.
The investigation revealed that Wani had been operating under false pretenses, presenting himself as a law enforcement officer in order to gain the trust of his victims. He would then use this trust to convince them to hand over money to him, often under the guise of helping them with legal matters or security concerns.
In the case of the victim who filed the complaint, Wani had promised to help him get a job in the police force. The victim paid Wani Rs. 90,000, but Wani never delivered on his promise.
Police have recovered Rs. 40,000 of the money that Wani defrauded from his victims. He has been charged with fraud and impersonation, and he is currently in police custody.
The police have urged citizens to be vigilant and to report any suspicious activity to the authorities. They have also warned that anyone caught impersonating a law enforcement officer will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
