Srinagar, the capital of Jammu and Kashmir, experienced its coldest night of the season on Wednesday, with temperatures plummeting to a bone-chilling minus 5.4 degrees Celsius. This surpassed the previous night’s record low of minus 5.3 degrees Celsius.
The intense cold wave gripped the entire valley, with several other towns recording temperatures well below freezing point. Pahalgam dipped to minus 5.8 degrees Celsius, while Gulmarg shivered at minus 5 degrees Celsius. Qazigund, Kokernag, and Kupwara also experienced frigid temperatures, with lows of minus 3.8 degrees Celsius, minus 1.6 degrees Celsius, and minus 4.2 degrees Celsius respectively.
This extreme cold resulted in the freezing of numerous water bodies, including water supply pipes in many areas, causing disruption and inconvenience.
The Meteorological Department predicts dry weather till December 15, with the possibility of mild precipitation over the weekend. This may offer some respite from the bone-chilling temperatures, but residents are advised to remain prepared for the continuing cold spell.
