The Border Roads Organization (BRO) has achieved a historic feat by taking the first set of vehicles to the holy Amarnath cave. The BRO is responsible for widening the roads leading to the cave.
A BRO official said that they took a truck and a small pickup vehicle from Dumail to the Amarnath Cave via Baltal base camp. The vehicles were used for the ongoing work near the cave.
The official said that the BRO is working to widen the nearly 13-kilometer road stretch from the Sangam base and Sangam top road to the cave. The new road will reduce the travel time for pilgrims.
The Amarnath cave is situated at a height of about 3,888 meters above sea level in south Kashmir. It is a holy pilgrimage site for Hindus, and thousands of devotees participate in the Amarnath Yatra every year. This year, more than 4.5 lakh pilgrims offered prayers at the cave shrine.
The yatra takes place simultaneously from two routes—the Pahalgam track in the Anantnag district and Baltal in the Ganderbal district.
In April this year, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, announced that the 110 km-long Amarnath Marg leading to the holy Amarnath cave in Pahalgam would be built at a cost of around Rs 5300 crore for the convenience of pilgrims.
