Chief Minister Omar Abdullah reiterated his government’s commitment to addressing the concerns of the trading community and fostering economic revival in the region during a meeting with the Kashmir Traders and Manufacturers Federation (KTMF), led by Chairman Mohammad Yaseen Khan.
Government’s Stance on Economic Revival
Chief Minister Abdullah acknowledged the economic challenges, stating, “We will strive to make the best possible use of the resources currently available to us.” He recognized that the economy’s current state was a result of long-term developments.
Addressing Traders’ Concerns
In response to issues raised by the traders, the Chief Minister assured that concerns regarding encroachments on main roads, market access, infrastructure deficiencies, and allied facilities would be prioritized. He emphasized respectful engagement between government departments and traders, stating, “Issues related to development, street vendors blocking way in front of shopkeepers, and market accessibility must be resolved through mutual cooperation.”
Healthcare and Infrastructure Development
Regarding healthcare, Chief Minister Abdullah informed the delegation about ongoing infrastructure projects, including orders for critical medical equipment like cath labs and MRIs for hospitals. He also directed the Finance Department to release funds for road macadamization to improve road infrastructure.
Strengthening the Local Economy
To bolster the local economy, Omar Abdullah highlighted efforts to prioritize local contractors in public works, enabling them to benefit from development initiatives.
Financial Relief for Traders
The Chief Minister also committed to taking up issues related to interest subvention and the deferment of monthly installments of bank loans with the Union Finance Ministry. He concluded by assuring the delegation of the government’s continued attention and efforts to resolve their concerns.
Traders’ Key Issues
Earlier, the traders’ representatives had presented a range of concerns, including the need for interest subvention, deferment of three monthly bank loan installments, poor road connectivity, lack of adequate marketplaces, and subsidized transport charges for air-conditioned vans used in transporting horticultural produce to terminal markets in South Indian States.
Additional Chief Secretary Dheeraj Gupta and other senior officers were present at the meeting.
